I am writing from Spain. I met Bob in the years 1980-1981 when he was Director of Marketing at American Express in Madrid. I had just finished my university studies and my first job was at American Express. Bob was a magnificent leader and all of us who worked with him have wonderful memories of those times. He is a great professional and a person you can trust. I hope that he gets the nomination. Good luck, Bob!!!

FALLBROOK — Despite facing a wealthy incumbent in a heavily Republican district, Democrat Robert J. Hamilton said Monday that he believes he can unseat the GOP’s Darrell Issa from Congressbecause area voters are ready for a change.”
I just want us to be proud of our government again, just like we were taught in our school,” said Hamilton, 61. “I’ve lived overseas a lot, and the world used to look at the United States as a beacon of freedom and hope. We’ve lost our allies around the world in so many cases.”
Hamilton recently announced his candidacy for the 49th Congressional District, which includes parts of San Diego and Riverside counties and encompasses Vista, Oceanside and Camp Pendleton to the south, Lake Elsinore to the north and Julian to the east.
The deadline to enter the race was Friday, and Hamilton faces no other Democrat in the June3 primary. He and Libertarian Lars Grossmith of Vista will face four-term incumbent Issa in the Nov. 4 general election.”
I think Republicans are more vulnerable right now,” he said. “I think a lot of people are upset about what the Bush-Cheney administration has done. They’re upset about the war, incompetency and the whole Katrina thing.”
While he sees anti-Republican sentiment helping his campaign, Hamilton said he wanted to focus on the positive.”
Let’s reach out to each other and try to solve problems, and not accuse the other party of causing disaster,” he said.”
Mybackground is business,” he continued. “I’m not out to soak the rich. I want to represent everybody.”
Hamilton said he is a centrist and believes in a strong military and national security.”
Nobody wants to pay more taxes than they have to, and I’m fairly opened-mind on social issues,” he said. “I’m finding Republicans in Southern California and Fallbrook can support that.”
This is Hamilton’s first campaign for public office, and he said he has raised $25,000. Issa, a multimillionaire, had raised $524,108 as of Dec. 31, according tofederal election records.
A U.S. Naval Reserve veteran who served as an anti-submarine warfare officer in Vietnam, Hamilton was born in Kankakee, Ill., then moved at age 1 to Havana, where his father worked for Swift and Co. meatpackers.”
I grew up bilingual and consider myself bicultural,” Hamilton said.
Growing up in Havana in the 1950s was a rich, cultural experience, he said, with schools focused on getting students into the best universities in the world. When Fidel Castro came to power, however, the dictator nationalized all American companies, and in 1962 Hamilton and his family left for Miami, each with just $5 in their pockets.
From there they moved to New Orleans and eventually to Southern California, where his family ran a small motel and he worked his way through UCLA.
After college, Hamilton worked five years in banking before being hired by AmericanExpress, which in 1975 stationed him in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 1976, thecompany sent him to Caracas, Venezuela, where he ran destination salesthroughout Central America for two years.
From1981-84, he was director of marketing and sales for American Express in Spain, which had him doing business throughout Europe.
Returning to the United States, he and his family moved to Poway in 1984, then moved to Los Angeles nine years ago. He retired to Fallbrook four years ago and became interested in politics after running Laurel Nicholson’s campaign for the 66th State Assembly District two years ago. After her loss, Hamilton served a one-year term as president of the Fallbrook Democratic Club
Hamilton and his wife of 36 years, Jenifer, have three children. One son served 10 months in Iraq as a National Guard commanding officer. A daughter is a teacher attending graduate school south of Oakland, and another son lives in 4S Ranch near Poway where he works for an automobile insurance company.
Hamilton will officially kick off his campaign with a public event at 4 p.m. on March 18at Pala Mesa Resort, 2001 Old Highway 395, in Fallbrook. Special guest will be Francine Busby, a former 50th District congressional candidate.
